The Kikuyu Council of Elders has announced the resumption of the traditional rite of passage for boys after a one-year break. The pause, according to the elders, was to allow learners to transition smoothly from Grade Eight to Grade Nine under the new education system.
Council officials said the exercise, which begins once schools close, is vital for ushering in a new age-set, mentorship, and instilling discipline in young men.
Director of Culture, Kigochi Waimiri, emphasized that the program will address rising cases of drug and alcohol abuse among youth. He reiterated that the initiation is strictly cultural and not religious.
National Chairman Ndung’u Wa Gaithuma called on families and the government to support the exercise, describing it as crucial for molding boys into responsible men. The Council also confirmed the new age-set will be named “Grade-nine.”
Secretary-General Patrick Muiru stressed that while the church plays an important mentoring role, initiation remains a cultural practice guided by elders.
