The Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA) has commenced the implementation of the government-approved Women Empowerment Policy, marking a major step toward inclusive national development.
Speaking in Busia County, KIPPRA Executive Director Dr. Eldah Onsomu said the initiative seeks to ensure equitable development across all groups, particularly those that have been historically marginalized.
“We are implementing a program that focuses on empowering women and other marginalized groups through the national women empowerment policy. The goal is to ensure no one is left behind,” Dr. Onsomu said.
She explained that the policy will strengthen the participation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities in national development through capacity building, training, and access to economic opportunities.
Dr. Onsomu emphasized that empowering these groups is central to achieving sustainable and inclusive growth, noting that the policy also supports the monitoring of childcare and empowerment initiatives to enhance planning and social welfare.
“If we empower those left behind, national and sustainable development are assured,” she said.
The KIPPRA boss urged women in Busia and other counties to seize opportunities presented through the program, including government-backed projects and support for women-led enterprises and SMEs.
“Even as you work, ensure children’s welfare is prioritized nutrition, education, and training. These are key for families to benefit fully from empowerment programs,” she added.
In addition to social empowerment, KIPPRA has also aligned the policy implementation with environmental sustainability goals, supporting the government’s tree-planting initiative aimed at growing 15 billion trees by 2032.
“So far, we have planted 135,000 trees, including 9,500 this quarter alone, as part of our contribution to the government’s target,” Dr. Onsomu said.
The rollout of the Women Empowerment Policy is expected to accelerate Kenya’s progress toward inclusive economic development, social equity, and environmental sustainability ensuring that women and marginalized communities play a central role in shaping the country’s future.
