Kirinyaga County transitions 6,000 households to clean cooking with free LPG kits to curb deforestation, pollution

Kirinyaga County’s clean energy drive is gaining momentum, with more than 6,000 households now switching from firewood to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for cooking a major step toward combating deforestation, air pollution, and climate change.

Under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) programme, the county has distributed 5,800 free Meko gas cookers this year, alongside an additional 600 cookers through a ward-based initiative targeting families living near Mt. Kenya Forest.

Governor Anne Waiguru said the shift to LPG is not only improving health outcomes but also conserving the environment.

“By adopting clean cooking, we are saving over 500 mature trees each year and protecting our women and children from the dangers of indoor smoke,” Waiguru stated.

The county also plans to establish a clean cooking program at Kibingoti Polytechnic to train women’s groups in making energy-saving jikos.

Public Health Officer Margaret Wambui noted that indoor pollution remains a leading cause of respiratory illnesses among women and children in rural homes. “Switching to LPG reduces disease, saves time, and eases the financial burden of healthcare,” she added.

County CEC for Environment James Mutugi said the clean energy program is part of Kirinyaga’s broader climate resilience strategy. “We are empowering communities with lasting solutions to adapt and thrive in the face of climate change,” he said.

Beneficiaries hailed the initiative as life-changing, citing improved health, faster meal preparation, and reduced workload. “Cooking is easier and healthier now. I no longer spend hours collecting firewood,” said Hellen Wanjiku from Kutus.

Through complementary efforts such as agroforestry, water projects, and the Wezesha Kirinyaga program, the county continues to strengthen climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods.
