Police officers in Kirinyaga County have embarked on the construction of a multipurpose sanctuary at the county police headquarters in Kerugoya, aimed at fostering mental wellness, spiritual support, and stronger community relations.
The project, located next to the site of the upcoming police affordable housing units, will serve as a worship centre and a venue for counselling and community engagement.
Kirinyaga County Police Commander Nelson Taliti said the initiative was born from consultations with police chaplains and the community, leading to a successful fundraiser that raised over Ksh800,000. He noted that the sanctuary will provide a safe space for officers to receive mental health support and participate in joint worship with local residents a move expected to strengthen community policing.
“We face real challenges with mental health among officers. This sanctuary will allow us to host professionals who can offer guidance and therapy while promoting spiritual renewal,” said Taliti.
The project will be implemented in collaboration with the State Department of Correctional Services, which will provide labour through prison service personnel.
Bishop Emeritus Zachary Muchai of the PEFA Church, who presided over the groundbreaking, lauded the initiative, saying it represents hope and healing for the police service. “Counselling can help to a point, but prayer brings deeper healing. We believe this sanctuary will transform lives,” he said.
Construction is expected to begin immediately, with officers and community members encouraged to contribute towards completing the wellness sanctuary.
