Hundreds of young people in Kirinyaga County are set to benefit from free digital literacy training through the DigiTruck Program, a new initiative aimed at equipping the youth with essential ICT skills and access to online job opportunities.
The training, launched at Gichugu Technical and Vocational College, is a partnership between Computers for Schools Kenya (CFSK) and global technology firm Huawei, in collaboration with Ajira Digital.
The 10-day training seeks to empower rural youth with basic digital knowledge, online work skills, and exposure to modern ICT tools to enhance employability.
Under the program, a 40-foot solar-powered truck converted into a digital classroom is being used to train participants. The mobile classroom is equipped with laptops, smartphones, VR headsets, and internet connectivity bringing technology closer to remote communities.
Speaking during the launch, CFSK representative Adams Makau said the initiative is part of Huawei’s TECH4ALL project, which focuses on bridging digital gaps in rural areas.
“The DigiTruck travels to different counties offering digital literacy, online services, and job-seeking skills to groups such as youth, women, and senior citizens,” said Makau.
Gichugu MP Gichimu Githinji, who officiated the event, hailed the program, saying it will help curb youth unemployment and bridge the digital divide at the grassroots.
“I encourage our young people to take advantage of this opportunity to gain digital skills that will open new doors for them,” Gichimu said.
Trainees are learning how to effectively use computers and smartphones, create professional resumes, apply for jobs online, and access public services through digital platforms key skills needed to thrive in Kenya’s growing digital economy.
