Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Deputy Secretary General Dennis Miskellah has accused President William Ruto and senior government officials of deceiving Kenyans into believing that healthcare under the new Social Health Authority (SHA) is free.
Speaking on Friday, Miskellah said the government’s messaging around the SHA was “dishonest and dangerously misleading,” arguing that citizens were not being told the truth about how the new health funds operate.
“There’s nothing like free healthcare,” he said. “Someone must pay for treatment it’s just unclear who or how.”
Miskellah faulted the government for failing to educate Kenyans on the three SHA funds and how contributions are managed. He added that most citizens, especially those in the informal sector, remain confused about their obligations.
He called on the Ministry of Health to promote transparency and accountability in the management of SHA funds, warning that the illusion of free healthcare could erode public trust in universal health coverage.
