The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has confirmed that it will proceed with a nationwide teacher’s strike starting on Monday, August 26, 2024. This decision comes despite recent government efforts to address some of the union’s concerns.
KNUT, along with the Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET), has been advocating for several key issues affecting teachers’ welfare. These include the confirmation of intern teachers, promotion of teachers, recruitment of new teachers, prompt remittance of deductions, and the negotiation of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The government recently allocated nearly Ksh.30 billion to the Ministry of Education to support various educational initiatives, including free primary and secondary education. However, the unions have expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s response, stating that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has failed to address their core demands.
KNUT and KUPPET officials have reiterated their commitment to the strike, emphasizing that the TSC’s failure to meet their demands leaves them with no other option. They have urged parents to prepare for the strike and advised against sending children to school on the planned strike date.date.
