The Komothai Coffee Farmers Cooperative Society has reopened its doors after obtaining a Grower Miller License. This milestone not only signals a revival for the esteemed cooperative but also represents a pivotal moment for over 10,000 farmers across its 13 factories.
The Komothai Coffee Farmers Cooperative Society, comprised of Riakahara, Gathiruini, Barikongo, Kagwanja, Kirura, Korokoro, Githongo, Thiururi, Kaibu, New Thuita, Kanake, Gatuyu, and Kamuchege factories, boasts a rich history in premium coffee production. Despite facing challenges in recent years, the society’s reopening, fueled by the Grower Miller License, signifies a pivotal moment for both the society and its members.
The acquisition of the Grower Miller License marks a turning point for the cooperative and its members. This license grants farmers unprecedented control over their coffee’s value chain, allowing them to cultivate, mill, and market their coffee directly or through the coffee exchange. By bypassing traditional middlemen, farmers stand to maximize profits and assert greater influence over the market.
Recognizing the potential of this revival, Kiambu County has pledged support to the cooperative. They will assist in modernizing infrastructure, including constructing a perimeter wall, a coffee cupping center, and refurbishing the processing plant. Free coffee fertilizer and essential inputs will be provided to farmers, boosting productivity and income potential.
At the official opening, in her address, the area MP Gathoni Wamuchomba expressed gratitude to Governor Kimani Wamatangi, the area MCA, and all Kiambu County leadership for issuing the Growers Milling License. She also extended appreciation to the Chairman of the society, all factory chairmen, and the farmers for their tireless support and efforts to revive the mill.
This development is a positive step for both the society and the wider Kenyan coffee industry, showcasing the power of collaboration, government support, and empowering farmers. With renewed infrastructure, access to resources, and the freedom to directly market their product, the Komothai Cooperative Society looks forward to a bright future.
