The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has announced a full waiver on all accrued storage and warehouse rent charges for long-stay containers at the Port of Mombasa, offering importers a crucial reprieve from mounting penalties.
The waiver, which is valid until December 6, 2025, was confirmed in a public notice shared by the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI). Importers must lodge official applications through KPA, KRA or licensed clearing agents to access the relief.
KPA Managing Director William Ruto noted that shipping lines have also been directed to issue a 100 per cent waiver on accrued demurrage charges. Only primary port fees, rail freight charges, statutory taxes and select shipping line costs are excluded from the waiver.
This intervention comes amid frequent port delays that have burdened businesses with steep penalties, sometimes exceeding the value of the goods being shipped.
The relief extends beyond Kenya, benefiting traders from Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda and Eastern DRC, who depend on Mombasa for regional imports.
Importers have been urged to act swiftly, with less than two weeks left before the deadline.
