The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has reinstated the ‘Nil Returns’ option on the iTax platform following the completion of system validation.
The move comes two weeks after the authority suspended the option as part of efforts to bring more Kenyans into the tax net and improve compliance. During the suspension, KRA reviewed income tax records, withholding taxes, eTIMS data and customs transactions to identify individuals earning taxable income but filing nil returns.
KRA confirmed that nil-filers will be allowed to submit their January to December 2025 income tax returns after March 31, 2026. However, filing for previous years and other tax obligations such as PAYE, turnover tax and rental income tax will continue as usual.
The authority says the move is part of broader reforms aimed at widening the tax base and strengthening revenue collection.
