The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has recorded a historic milestone after collecting Ksh85.146 billion in customs revenue for September 2025, the highest ever in its 30-year history.
According to the Commissioner for Customs and Border Control, the performance surpassed the previous record of Ksh82.554 billion set in January 2025 and exceeded the month’s target of Ksh81.341 billion by Ksh3.8 billion, reflecting a 104.7 percent performance rate.
“This outstanding performance demonstrates KRA’s sustained progress in revenue mobilization and efficiency gains across customs operations,” the Commissioner said in a statement.
The collection marked an 18.8% year-on-year growth compared to September 2024, with trade taxes and petroleum levies driving the surge. Trade taxes generated Ksh51.7 billion, surpassing their target of Ksh50.7 billion, while petroleum levies achieved an impressive 109.2% performance, raising Ksh33.4 billion against a target of Ksh30.6 billion.
KRA attributed the success to ongoing reforms, including the Central Release Operations Office, which uses a digital allocation system for random cargo verification significantly cutting human interference and speeding up clearance times at ports and border points.
“The new verification system has minimized human contact, improved turnaround time, and closed potential revenue loopholes,” the agency noted.
The customs department continues to play a crucial role in KRA’s broader tax strategy, accounting for 34% of total revenue in the 2024/25 financial year.
The impressive September performance comes as Kenya faces mounting fiscal pressure and limited borrowing options, pushing the government to enhance domestic revenue collection.
KRA reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining this growth through its Revenue Service 3.0 transformation agenda, which focuses on digitalization, improved taxpayer experience, and a wider tax base.
