KRA unveils automated tax filing for salaried Kenyans in major relief for workers

Salaried employees can now breathe easier after the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) announced a new system that will automate the filing of annual income tax returns.

Under the updated system, workers will only be required to input their National Identification (ID) number into the iTax portal. The system will then automatically generate income tax details, including gross pay and statutory deductions, for the fiscal year.

The change eliminates the tedious process of manually keying in details from P9 forms, a step that many taxpayers had long complained about.

KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattang’a said the move is part of an ongoing integration of tax data with external government databases.

“Data is going to become, or has become, our greatest asset, so we want to see how we integrate it into various data systems internally so that we do not have siloed systems but integrated systems,” Wattang’a explained.

He added that integration with systems such as business and citizen registration will help streamline compliance by prepopulating taxpayer data.

The Commissioner General stressed that KRA’s digitization journey is guided by extensive engagements with other government agencies, noting the broader goal is to simplify tax compliance for both individuals and businesses.

By law, every Kenyan with a KRA Personal Identification Number (PIN) must file an annual income tax return, whether or not they earned income during the year.

This latest development comes less than two months after KRA closed its iTax portal for the 2024 filing season.
