Efforts to restore a key transport route in Lari Constituency have gathered pace after the area Member of Parliament, Mburu Kahangara, oversaw the start of construction works along the damaged Ngenya–Nyanduma road.
The project follows extensive destruction caused by heavy rains, which left parts of the road near St Teresa Model Primary School and St Teresa Catholic Ngenya impassable and raised safety concerns among residents.
Speaking after the commencement of works, Kahangara said the construction of a permanent retaining wall and installation of gabions would help stabilise the affected section and prevent further damage. The intervention is aimed at holding the soil firmly in place and protecting the road from future washaways.
The MP noted that the works are being carried out in line with earlier commitments made to the local community and contractors. He assured residents that the project would not only restore accessibility but also provide a long-term solution to recurring challenges brought about by heavy rains in the area.
Residents have previously raised concerns over the state of the road, especially during the rainy season when erosion often disrupts transport and daily activities. The damaged section had made it difficult for motorists, school-going children, and traders to move safely, prompting calls for urgent action.
Kahangara emphasised that the ongoing works form part of broader efforts to improve infrastructure within the constituency. He revealed that his office is also fast-tracking the completion of the entire Ngenya–Nyanduma road to enhance connectivity and ease movement across the region.
The project is expected to benefit local communities by improving access to schools, markets, and essential services. Traders and farmers in the area stand to gain from smoother transport of goods, especially during peak agricultural seasons.
Local leaders and residents have welcomed the move, expressing optimism that the intervention will bring lasting relief and reduce the impact of future rains. They also called for continued maintenance of roads to sustain the improvements being made.
The development comes amid ongoing infrastructure upgrades in various parts of Kiambu County, as leaders push to address long-standing challenges affecting road networks.
Once completed, the retaining structures and road works are expected to significantly improve safety and ensure uninterrupted movement along the Ngenya–Nyanduma route, even during adverse weather conditions.
