Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has raised concerns for his safety after a live bullet struck near his home in Kibiku village, Kabete, on Sunday afternoon. The projectile pierced a neighbour’s roof and landed in a children’s bedroom about 50 metres from the governor’s residence, moments after he returned from his farm.
Witnesses suggested the bullet may have been deliberately aimed toward the governor’s home. Residents called on the government to reinforce his security immediately. “The only person who could be targeted, according to the direction of the bullet, is our governor,” said one local.
Wamatangi said the bullet appeared to have been fired from a powerful weapon, possibly an AK-47, from approximately 200 metres away. He urged police to investigate the shooter, the location, and the motive. Authorities are awaiting ballistic reports, and no official police statement has been released.
Margaret Njeri, the neighbour whose roof was pierced, described the terrifying incident, initially mistaking the strike for a stone before discovering the bullet while cleaning. She reported the matter to Kibiku Police Station and alerted officers at the governor’s residence.
The shooting comes amid a challenging political environment for Wamatangi, who has previously alleged threats and intimidation from local political figures. He has faced multiple impeachment threats from some Kiambu MCAs and legal scrutiny over alleged procurement irregularities, including an EACC operation in April 2025 related to a Ksh 813 million tender dispute.
Supporters say the latest incident underscores the heightened political tensions surrounding the governor and calls for urgent action to ensure his safety. Police investigations into the shooting are ongoing.
