Lobby seeks Nairobi County dissolution over rampant corruption claims

A civil society group is pushing for the dissolution of Nairobi County, accusing Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration of gross corruption and financial mismanagement.

Kenya Bora Tuitakayo said Nairobi has been crippled by misuse of public funds since September 2022, leaving residents burdened with debts and poor service delivery.

Spokesperson Cyprian Nyamwamu announced that the lobby will engage residents across all 17 constituencies and 85 wards to collect signatures demanding the removal of the governor, his deputy, and all MCAs.

“We shall immediately consult Nairobians in all the 17 constituencies and 85 wards on the need to collect signatures to dissolve the county government in toto. It is time to send the Governor, his deputy, and all the MCAs home,” said Nyamwamu.

The group further accused both UDA and ODM leaders of shielding Sakaja for political gain, saying the stalled impeachment motion was about party interests rather than residents’ welfare.

“We particularly call upon Senator (Edwin) Sifuna to support this initiative of rescuing Nairobi from the cruel and corrupt Sakaja regime,” Nyamwamu added.

According to the group, an independent audit commissioned on the county revealed shocking financial instability. While the 2023/2024 budget stood at Ksh42.2 billion, pending bills had ballooned to Sh118 billion, meaning Nairobi would have to shut down for three years just to clear debts without offering services.

The lobby claimed that despite receiving Ksh160.6 billion in allocations in recent years, poor management has left Nairobi with dilapidated services instead of world-class facilities. It alleged that more than Ksh120 billion has been lost to fraud and called for a comprehensive fraud audit.

“Based on these brief findings, we conclude that more than three-quarters (Ksh120 billion) have been defrauded, and hence the need for a fraud audit,” the group stated.

Kenya Bora Tuitakayo stressed that political protection has rendered impeachment useless, making dissolution the only option. They vowed to work with the Office of the Auditor General to push for transparency and accountability while urging Nairobians to back the signature drive.

“We call upon Nairobians in all the 85 wards to take their Nairobi back from the regime by supporting dissolution. Dissolution is the only way because we have seen how money has made impeachment impossible,” the group added.
