McCarthy tweaks Harambee Stars squad as Kenya prepares for historic CHAN 2024 debut

Final Touches: Harambee Stars Make Late Changes to Squad Ahead of CHAN 2024 Kick-Off

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has made three last-minute changes to his 25-man squad ahead of Kenya’s debut at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to begin on August 2.

The new call-ups, Shabana FC midfielder Brian Michira, Tusker FC defender Chrispin Erambo, and Sofapaka forward Edward Omondi, replace Mohammed Bajaber, Swaleh Pamba, and Brian Musa, who exited the squad due to injuries and other unforeseen circumstances.

Michira, a key figure in Shabana FC’s surprise title challenge, headlines the inclusions and is expected to bolster Kenya’s midfield options. Erambo and Omondi also bring form and hunger to the national team, as McCarthy fine-tunes preparations just days before the tournament.

Kenya will kick off their CHAN 2024 campaign against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, August 3, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The Harambee Stars are drawn in a competitive Group A alongside DR Congo, Angola, Morocco, and Zambia.

However, McCarthy’s side will enjoy the advantage of home turf, full government support, and a passionate fan base expected to pack the stadium for every match.

Balanced and Battle-Ready Squad

The 25-man squad features a strategic mix of seasoned players and emerging talent. Goalkeeper Faruk Shikhalo (Muhoroni Youth FC) is expected to be the first choice between the posts. He will be backed up by Byrne Omondi (KCB FC) and Sebastian Wekesa (Kariobangi Sharks).

In defence, captain Abud Omar leads a strong backline that includes Bandari FC’s Siraj Mohammed, Alphonce Omija (Club Dhofa), Sylvester Owino (Gor Mahia), and Mike Kibwage (Tusker FC). Newcomer Kevin Okumu is tipped to earn his first cap, joining Daniel Sakari and Lewis Bandi in providing defensive depth.

The midfield sees a blend of flair and grit, with Michira and Erambo joined by Alpha Onyango, Austin Odhiambo, Ben Stanley, and Marvin Nabwire. The group offers McCarthy tactical flexibility and the potential to control the tempo against top-tier opposition.

In attack, Masoud Juma brings experience and a proven scoring record. He’ll lead the frontline alongside newcomers Omondi and Felix Oluoch. Boniface Muchiri, David Sakwa, and Ryan Ogam offer additional firepower and tactical options for the coach.

One of the most anticipated debuts will be that of Austin Odongo from Shabana FC, who has been making waves in the local league and is now set for his first national appearance.

With the final lineup now confirmed and momentum building, Harambee Stars are gearing up for a milestone moment in Kenya’s football history.
