Moi University lecturers threaten fresh strike over unpaid salaries and unmet agreements

Learning at Moi University could grind to a halt next week after lecturers issued a fresh seven-day strike notice to the institution’s council.

In a letter dated August 12 and addressed to Council Chair Prof. Noah Midamba, the Universities’ Academic Staff Union (UASU) accused the university of breaching agreements and violating lecturers’ constitutional rights.

Signed by UASU National Secretary General Constantine Wasonga, the letter alleges Moi University has failed to pay academic staff their June and July 2025 salaries at the agreed rates under the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

“The Universities’ Academic Staff Union (UASU) hereby issues a seven (7)-day(s) Strike Notice with effect from the date of this letter to Moi University Council over the following four failures,” the letter stated.

The union also cited the administration’s failure to implement the Return-To-Work Formula signed on November 30, 2024, neglecting clauses on staff promotions, review processes, and retirement age provisions in the national CBA.

Lecturers have now threatened to down their tools from Wednesday, August 20, if these grievances are not addressed.

This looming industrial action adds to a history of strikes at Moi University, which have repeatedly disrupted learning.

Meanwhile, the university has hiked hostel fees, sparking discontent among students. Male students in hostels A, B, and C will now pay Ksh5,000 and Ksh7,000 annually for rooms with two double-deckers. Female students in hostels E, G, and K will continue paying Ksh5,000 for similar rooms.

Single rooms in Ngeria Hall 1–3 will cost Ksh8,000 annually, while semi-partitioned single rooms in Ngeria Hall 4 and 5 will also be Ksh8,000. Hostels H and J, offering one double-decker per room, will cost Ksh13,000 per year, and the main CHS hostel will be Ksh7,000.
