Members of Parliament have raised alarm over delays in the construction of sports academies in 37 constituencies, accusing the Sports Ministry of creating unnecessary hurdles that could derail youth development initiatives.
During a session at Bunge Towers, Nairobi, MPs criticized the Ministry for slow payments to contractors, warning that prolonged delays risk leaving the academies incomplete and could undermine political accountability. Only 15 academies are currently under active construction, while others face funding gaps, land disputes, and limited contractor readiness.
Committee chair Dan Wanyama said Parliament will hold officials accountable, including considering removal of the Principal Secretary, if delays continue. PS Elijah Mwangi defended the Ministry, citing the need to verify contractor certificates and comply with public finance regulations.
MPs stressed that completing the academies is crucial for nurturing grassroots talent and empowering youth across the country.
