Murang’a County launches Ndunyu ya Chege Smart City Phase I, boosting roads, business access, and local market development

Murang’a County Governor Dr. Irungu Kang’ata has officially commissioned Phase I of the Ndunyu ya Chege Smart City Project in Gatanga Constituency, marking a significant step toward modernizing market infrastructure and improving accessibility for traders and residents.

The project, which features cabro-paved roads through the shopping centre, aims to ease movement, enhance business activity, and create a more organized and vibrant market environment. “Our goal is to ensure that residents and traders enjoy better infrastructure that supports commerce and daily life,” said Dr. Kang’ata during the launch.

This initiative is part of a broader county plan to develop all 35 wards, with projects including tarmacked roads in Gatura and Kaguku, cabro paving in Greystone and Mukarara shopping centres, improved drainage systems, street lighting, and other public utilities designed to enhance market centres and surrounding communities.

Deputy Governor Stephen Munania, CECM for Infrastructure Eng. Pius Macharia, Deputy Speaker Hon. Moses Gachui, and local MCAs joined Governor Kang’ata to celebrate the project’s completion, highlighting the county leadership’s commitment to delivering tangible improvements in public infrastructure.

Residents welcomed the development, saying better roads and improved market facilities would reduce travel times, attract more customers, and boost local business growth. The county government affirmed that similar smart city projects will continue to roll out across Murang’a, ensuring that development reaches every ward, while creating safer, more efficient, and economically vibrant towns.
