The Murang’a County Government has issued a stern warning to residents and coffee farmers in Mathioya Sub-County over an unlicensed cooperative allegedly masquerading as a legitimate entity.
In a notice released on Wednesday, October 22, the county cautioned farmers against engaging with a group calling itself The New Coffee Cooperative, which is reportedly operating illegally in Upper Gitugi.
“The Murang’a County Government has been made aware of a new coffee cooperative operating in Upper Gitugi, Mathioya, purporting to be licensed by our office. The group is allegedly hawking coffee without authorization,” the county administration stated.
Authorities disclosed that the issue has been escalated to national agencies for investigation and possible enforcement action to ensure compliance with cooperative laws.
“The County Government has petitioned the National Government to review the licensing process and guarantee adherence to relevant regulations,” the statement added.
Farmers have been urged to remain vigilant and verify the legitimacy of any cooperative or organization before entering into commercial agreements.
“We urge all coffee farmers and residents to exercise caution and confirm the authenticity of any group before engaging in any transactions,” the county advised.
Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata’s administration has been pushing for transparency and accountability in the coffee sector to protect farmers from exploitation by unregistered entities that often prey on their trust.
