Parents and education stakeholders in Murang’a County have raised concerns over an acute shortage of Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), warning that the gap is disrupting learning and exposing pupils to safety risks.
The shortage has forced many learners to walk long distances daily to access JSS institutions, a situation parents say is exhausting for children and worrying for families. Speaking at Gachogi Primary and Junior School in Kangema during the commissioning of NG-CDF–funded infrastructure projects, parents urged the Ministry of Education to ensure all public primary schools establish JSS classes.
School administrators also faulted the current placement system, saying some learners have been posted to far-flung day schools outside the county, straining parents financially.
Kangema MP Peter Kihungi said several schools already meet the requirements to host JSS and should be gazetted without delay. He added that NG-CDF will continue supporting school infrastructure to ensure safe, accessible learning environments.
