Murkomen orders probe after journalists injured in chaos during Rigathi Gachagua’s arrival procession on Mombasa Road

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced a government investigation into the violent chaos that broke out during Deputy Chief Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua’s arrival procession along Mombasa Road on Friday.

The clashes left several journalists injured, including reporters from Royal Media Services, TV47, and Standard Group, after rival groups hurled stones near the Cabanas area, forcing Gachagua’s convoy to slow down.

Speaking on Saturday during the Julwa la Usalama forum in Kirinyaga, Murkomen warned that stern action would be taken against those responsible, regardless of their political affiliation.

“Those events will be investigated, and anybody who is found culpable, regardless of their political standing, will be held accountable. Anybody who organized for people to be stoned, including journalists who were hurt, we will take very stern action,” the CS stated.

Murkomen further accused Gachagua’s party of failing to notify the police beforehand, despite calls for prior communication. He argued that the lack of notice left police unprepared for the gatherings both at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and along Mombasa Road.

“When I said they need to notify the police, I heard one of their leaders, a former senator, saying they have no obligation to do so. Unfortunately, because of that, the police were not aware of what was going to happen. I wish they had heeded my advice,” Murkomen added.

The confrontation escalated quickly as rowdy youths blocked sections of Mombasa Road with rocks and crude weapons, paralyzing traffic and disrupting Gachagua’s convoy headed to Kamukunji.

Police officers, who had been on high alert, intervened moments later and dispersed the groups before the situation worsened further.

The investigation is expected to shed light on who organized the violence and ensure accountability, especially after journalists were caught in the crossfire.
