Mwea residents smile as new roads boost farming, transport and trade

Residents of Mwea Constituency are experiencing renewed economic momentum following the completion of key tarmacked roads that are transforming transport, agriculture and local trade.

For years, poor road infrastructure had constrained movement in the expansive Kirinyaga constituency, despite its position as a leading agricultural zone. Farmers and traders often struggled to access markets, resulting in high transport costs and frequent post-harvest losses.

That challenge is now easing after the national government completed major road upgrades connecting Mwea East, Mwea West and neighbouring regions. Roads such as South Ngariama–Ngurubani, PI–Murinduko–Kiumbu–Kiandegwa and Kangichirii–Nguka–Mwea Boys have opened up once hard-to-reach farming areas.

The improved network links productive zones known for rice, tomatoes, French beans and horticultural produce destined for both local and export markets. The projects fall under a Sh3 billion government contract covering 65 kilometres across Mwea, Ndia and Kirinyaga Central constituencies.

Beyond farming, residents say transport and business activities have significantly improved. Boda boda operators report reduced maintenance costs and faster travel, while some have upgraded to tuk-tuks due to improved road conditions.

Farmers have also welcomed the changes, saying timely access to markets has reduced losses and improved earnings. Residents further note that access to health services has improved, with ambulances now reaching villages that were previously inaccessible.

However, residents have raised concerns over road safety, calling for signage, speed bumps and clear markings, especially near schools. They are also urging investors to take advantage of the improved infrastructure to establish agri-processing plants and businesses along the road corridors.

Many believe the upgraded roads mark a turning point for Mwea, unlocking long-awaited economic potential and placing the region on a stronger growth path.
