NACADA Cracks Down on Illegal Rehab Centres in Kiambu

NACADA has shut down several illegal rehabilitation centers in Kiambu County after uncovering appalling conditions during surprise inspections. The crackdown, led by NACADA’s Compliance and Enforcement team, exposed filthy dormitories, overcrowded rooms, and a lack of proper medical care.

Officials found patients lying on torn mattresses in overcrowded dormitories. The rooms had poor ventilation and lacked basic sanitation. Toilets overflowed, creating serious health hazards. The kitchen, in even worse condition, had rotting food stored in unsanitary spaces. The absence of trained medical personnel made matters worse, leaving vulnerable patients without professional care.

During the raids, investigators saw sick patients suffering without medical attention. Some lacked proper clothing, while others showed signs of malnutrition. NACADA CEO Dr. Anthony Omerikwa condemned these centres, stating they exploited desperate families instead of helping addicts recover.

After shutting down the illegal centres, NACADA relocated patients to approved facilities. Officials contacted families to help with the transition. The authority urged the public to verify rehabilitation centre licenses through official channels and report suspicious operations using the toll-free number 1192.

Dr. Omerikwa emphasized the importance of high rehabilitation standards. Kenya has only 139 accredited rehabilitation facilities, serving over three million people battling addiction. He warned unlicensed operators of legal consequences and promised a nationwide crackdown on non-compliant centres.

This operation highlights the dangers of unregulated treatment centres. Many private rehabs operate illegally, taking advantage of Kenya’s addiction crisis. NACADA’s action signals a tougher stance on enforcement, ensuring patients receive proper care.
