Nairobi City Stars have been officially disbanded following their relegation from the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL).
Team coordinator Samson Otieno confirmed that club owner Jonathan Jackson shut down the team after a disappointing season that ended with City Stars at the bottom of the 18-team table.
“The club owner invested heavily in the team and was expecting results. He has decided to do away with the team after they were relegated from the top-tier league,” Otieno said.
Players were first warned in June, shortly after the season concluded. An official announcement on June 12 confirmed the dismissal of all players and the entire technical bench.
Otieno said Jackson was frustrated that the project failed to deliver and criticised players for lacking commitment despite full financial support.
“You cannot put your money in a loss-making business year in year out. The club owner was very categorical that he would rather invest in building basketball courts rather than dealing with a non-productive entity,” he added.
City Stars drop to the National Super League (NSL), but with their disbandment, the league will now have 18 teams. The Football Kenya Federation has yet to confirm whether the club will be replaced for the 2025/26 season.
This is not the first time the club has faced relegation. City Stars were demoted in 2016 but made a comeback at the end of the Covid-19-shortened 2019/20 campaign.
