Nairobi County gives Eastleigh traders seven days to clean up drainage systems or face legal action

The Nairobi County Government has given traders and property owners in Eastleigh a seven-day ultimatum to clear and maintain drainage systems within 10 metres of their premises or risk facing legal and administrative action.

In a statement issued on Monday, Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria warned that non-compliance would attract penalties under the Nairobi City County Solid Waste Management Act, 2015.

“The impunity in Eastleigh must stop. To all business owners, landlords, and building owners whose properties are near drainage systems, it is your responsibility to ensure these areas are clean,” read part of Mosiria’s notice.

Mosiria, who led a compliance inspection in the area, decried the growing trend of traders and landlords using drainage channels as dumping sites, resulting in frequent blockages and flash floods whenever it rains.

He added that despite continuous clean-up drives by the county, some residents persist in illegal dumping, frustrating the government’s efforts to maintain a clean environment.

“Drainage systems are not dumping sites. Those who ignore this directive, even after being educated on environmental laws, will face enforcement action,” Mosiria warned.

The county government announced that inspection teams will be deployed after the one-week grace period to monitor compliance. Traders or property owners found in violation risk business permit revocation, closure of premises, or prosecution.

Under the by-laws, offenders can be fined up to Ksh200,000 depending on the gravity of the offence. Minor violations such as littering attract fines from Ksh10,000, while repeat offenders could face up to six months in jail or both.

A spot check revealed that waste dumping remains rampant in Eastleigh, with clogged drainage systems posing serious health and environmental hazards to residents and businesses.
