Nairobi County health workers strike over unpaid salaries, protest outside Sakaja’s office as health crisis deepens

A health crisis is looming in Nairobi after county health workers staged protests on Thursday, October 2, over delayed salaries.

The workers, who downed their tools and marched from Jevanjee Gardens to City Hall Annex, accused Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration of failing to honor agreements on timely salary payments. They claimed they have gone without pay for three months.

“We have not been paid our salaries for the last three months. The county loves signing agreements with us but does not fulfil them. We are tired,” said Malindi Chao, KMPDU Nairobi Secretary.

Stephen Muthama, chair of KUCO Nairobi, added that excuses about delayed disbursements from the Exchequer were unacceptable.

Efforts to meet Governor Sakaja failed as he was away at the Kenya School of Government in Kabete attending a Jukwaa la Usalama forum.

The protest comes just weeks after Nairobi county workers held a go-slow on September 18 over salary delays. Kenya County Government Workers Union officials said the county has repeatedly breached a return-to-work agreement signed in August committing to pay workers by the fifth of every month.

Union officials warned that many employees can no longer meet their financial obligations, with some unable to afford transport to work.
