Authorities have issued a warning to residents living near Nairobi Dam as water levels rise sharply following persistent heavy rains across the country. The government has dispatched technical teams to assess the dam’s safety and prevent further loss of life and property.
Government Spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura, said on Tuesday evening that the situation is being closely monitored. “The government is closely monitoring the rising water levels at Nairobi Dam and advises residents living downstream to remain alert. A technical assessment of the dam is currently underway,” Mwaura stated.
Official reports indicate that at least 49 people have died in floods across Kenya, while more than 9,000 households have been displaced. Nairobi City County has been the hardest hit, with 27 deaths and over 5,260 households forced to leave their homes. Other regions affected include Eastern (11 deaths), Rift Valley (five deaths), and Coast and Nyanza regions, each recording one death.
Displacement has been widespread, with thousands of families seeking refuge in safer areas. The Rift Valley accounts for 2,538 displaced households, Central region 434, Nyanza 415, Coast 282, Eastern 58, and Western 46. Counties hardest hit include Tana River, Kilifi, Kwale, Taita Taveta, Narok, Baringo, Nandi, Makueni, Kitui, Tharaka Nithi, Marsabit, Meru, Kiambu, Kisumu, Kisii, Homa Bay, Migori, Wajir, and Nairobi.
Mwaura urged residents to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to official safety advisories. “Let us remain alert, follow official advisories and take precautionary measures, particularly those living in flood-prone areas,” he said.
Four people remain missing, and four others are receiving treatment for flood-related injuries. The government has also announced support for affected families, including covering mortuary and funeral expenses for those who lost their lives.
Forecasters warn that rainfall is expected to continue between March 10 and 16, 2026, raising concerns about further flooding in vulnerable areas. Authorities have called on communities to act cautiously, report emergencies promptly, and avoid flood-prone zones until water levels stabilize.
As the situation evolves, residents near Nairobi Dam are urged to stay informed through official channels and take necessary measures to protect life and property.
