National, county governments review food security projects in Mombasa

National and county governments have reaffirmed their commitment to transforming Kenya’s food systems during a joint review meeting on key agricultural programmes underway in Mombasa County.

The three-day meeting, running from February 3 to 5, brings together the Council of Governors, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, and National Project Coordinating Units to assess progress on the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project and the Food Systems Resilience Program.

Discussions are centred on scaling up implementation, promoting farmer-centred solutions and strengthening coordinated responses to the ongoing drought affecting ASAL counties. Leaders are also exploring ways to leverage digital agriculture tools, including the Kenya Agriculture Digital Centre, to improve extension services, market access and data-driven decision-making.

Other key focus areas include access to agricultural finance, inclusive value chains, agro-processing, irrigation, water harvesting, rangeland management and climate adaptation. Both levels of government also underscored the importance of timely approvals and disbursements from development partners to accelerate delivery of tangible benefits at the community level.
