The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) has officially launched a fully digital ticketing system on the eCitizen platform, a move that phases out manual payments at major heritage sites and ushers in a modernized entry process for visitors nationwide.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, NMK announced that all previously purchased tickets must be used within 30 days, after which only digital tickets will be accepted. The new system is already running at the Nairobi National Museum, Karen Blixen Museum, Nairobi Gallery, Fort Jesus National Monument, Malindi Museum and Gedi National Monument.
According to NMK, the transition is meant to streamline entry, enhance visitor experience and improve revenue collection across museums and archaeological sites. Other stations including Lamu Museum, Hyrax Hill, Kisumu Museum, Kitale Museum, Meru Museum, Kariandusi and Thimlich Ohinga will be added to the system gradually.
To buy tickets, visitors must log in to nmkpay.ecitizen.go.ke, select the ticket type, provide required personal details and choose a visit date. The guidelines emphasize that payments must be made under the Nairobi National Museum Bill category, and tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable. Visitors will be required to present a National ID alongside the digital ticket during entry.
NMK says the digitization drive aligns with the government’s wider efforts to modernize public service delivery and enhance transparency in revenue management, especially for high-traffic cultural and historical sites.
