Kenya is set to host a world-class basketball arena after the government struck a deal with the National Basketball Association (NBA) to fund its construction.
The Ministry of Sports announced that Kenya will provide land for the facility, while the NBA will finance and oversee the development. The arena will be dedicated to basketball and positioned to host top-tier fixtures, including games from the Basketball Africa League (BAL).
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya said the project will create jobs, open pathways for local talent, and attract international tournaments. NBA Africa CEO Clare Akamanzi praised the partnership, describing it as a “game changer” for Kenya’s sporting future.
Currently, Nyayo National Stadium Indoor Arena remains the country’s only premier indoor basketball venue. The new facility is expected to elevate Kenya to the same level as Rwanda, which has gained continental recognition through its Ksh13 billion BK Arena.
“This arena will be a landmark for Kenya and a beacon of opportunity for our athletes,” Mvurya said, stressing its alignment with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
