The Kiambu County Coordinating Committee (NCCK) held a meeting on February 29th, 2024, at ACK St. Paul’s Church in Kiambu to discuss the county’s current state. Clergy, church leaders, and the NCCK regional chair participated in the discussions.
The committee expressed deep concern about the rising cost of living and its detrimental impact on the mental health and well-being of residents in Kiambu. They urged the government to take immediate action to address this issue and prevent further damage to Kiambu and the nation as a whole.
The prevalence of alcohol and drug abuse was highlighted as a significant concern, leading to increased crime, insecurity, and mental health problems. The committee called upon the government to implement a concerted effort to fight drug and substance abuse, regulate entertainment establishments, and crack down on the production of illicit brews.
The committee urged the Kiambu County government to prioritize issues critical to residents, including ensuring adequate medical supplies in hospitals to improve access to healthcare, investing in infrastructure development, and supporting education initiatives.
Furthermore, the committee condemned the ongoing political bickering in Kiambu and called upon elected leaders to set aside their differences and engage in constructive dialogue to find solutions for the problems faced by residents. They urged leaders to unite, collaborate, and allow those in leadership positions to perform their duties without undue interference for the greater good of the county.
Finally, due to the economic hardships faced by residents, the committee urged the county government to review and amend the land rates bill. They expressed strong concerns about the new taxation demands imposed on freehold landowners, including a 3% monthly penalty backdated to 2016. They argue that the act and its enforcement are punitive and place an undue burden on residents during this challenging economic period.
