The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued closure threats to 107 clubs, bars, lounges, and restaurants across the country over noise pollution concerns.
In a public notice issued on Monday, the Authority gave the establishments seven days to submit environmental compliance documents or risk being shut down. Among the required documents are an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) licence, a current Environmental Audit (EA), proof of incorporation, a CR-12 listing directors and owners, and detailed noise control measures.
NEMA noted that despite serving several facilities with Environmental Restoration Orders, the majority have failed to comply. Most of the listed establishments are located in Nairobi, including popular spots such as Quiver and Habanos, with others spread across Kilimani, Ruiru, Ruaka, Uthiru, Kiambu Road, Riverside Drive, and Mirema.
Beyond the capital, some establishments in Kabarnet, Homa Bay, Meru, Kakamega, Webuye, and Nanyuki have also been cited. In Mombasa, even a well-known crocodile farm and a backpacker hostel in Nyali were listed.
The Authority said the full list of affected establishments has been published on NEMA’s website and social media platforms.
