A major milestone is taking shape in Kijabe Ward, Lari Municipality, as the construction of a modern market in Kimende gains momentum. The project, spearheaded by the County Government of Kiambu, promises to transform the local trading landscape and uplift the livelihoods of hundreds of traders.
The market, part of Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s broader economic agenda, is designed to provide a clean, secure, and structured environment for both vendors and customers. It will feature modern stalls, sanitary facilities, storage areas, and designated sections for fresh produce, clothing, and household items.
Steelworks, foundation excavation, and structural layout are currently underway, with the first phase expected to open in the coming months.
Speaking during a recent inspection, community leader Beth wa Lari hailed the initiative:
“This is a game-changer for our people. Kimende traders have waited for a proper market for years, and now it’s finally happening. It will open up more opportunities for business and improve hygiene standards.”
Long-time vendor Beatrice Njeri echoed the sentiment, saying:
“We’ve been working in open spaces with no shade or water. Sometimes rain destroys our goods. Now we will have decent stalls, and customers will feel more comfortable shopping. This project means dignity for us.”
The market revamp is a key part of Kiambu County’s plan to strengthen small and medium enterprises (SMEs), reduce congestion, enhance revenue collection, and generate jobs, especially for youth and women.
County officials have assured the public of transparency and community engagement throughout the construction process. With each phase, traders in Kimende inch closer to a modern, organized trading hub that reflects their hard work and resilience.
