Tension flared in Ngara, Nairobi, on Wednesday, October 8, as more than 600 traders staged protests following the demolition of their shops at Fig Tree market.
The traders, angered by the destruction of their businesses by unknown individuals, lit bonfires and barricaded Limuru Road, paralyzing transport between Nairobi and Kiambu counties.
Eyewitnesses said the demolition began at night, with groups of young men allegedly escorted by armed police officers tearing down structures to clear the land for a modern housing project.
Sources revealed the land had been leased to traders for a set period, but after the agreement expired, they refused to vacate, prompting the property owners to act.
Efforts by private developers to resolve the dispute amicably reportedly failed, forcing the demolition to proceed. Footage from the scene showed traders clashing with police officers deployed to secure the area.
The affected traders accused Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration of failing to intervene despite repeated appeals. The county government has not issued an official statement on the matter.
Ngara market has faced several eviction and demolition threats in the past due to ongoing ownership disputes between traders and private landowners. Similar protests have been witnessed elsewhere in Nairobi including at Uhuru Market in March, when traders blocked Jogoo Road over planned demolitions.
