The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a stern warning to motorists against tampering with mandatory speed limiters installed in Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) and commercial vehicles.
In a press release on December 20, the authority emphasized that tampering with speed governors is unlawful and poses significant risks to passengers, pedestrians, and other road users. NTSA noted a rising trend in such violations during recent enforcement operations.
The agency further reiterated that speeding remains the leading cause of road accidents, urging drivers to comply with traffic regulations. In addition, NTSA warned against drinking and driving, highlighting that alcohol-related incidents have claimed numerous lives, including notable cases during the festive season.
Random breathalyser checks (AlcoBlow) will be intensified across major highways, with offenders facing fines from Ksh10,000 to Ksh20,000, or imprisonment for at least three months. Repeat or severe offenders may incur penalties of up to Ksh100,000, while their driving licences can be suspended or withdrawn.
The NTSA statement concluded by urging all motorists to prioritise road safety, comply with speed limits, and avoid alcohol consumption while driving, reinforcing the authority’s commitment to saving lives on Kenyan roads.
