Kenyans can now transfer motor vehicle ownership instantly through the eCitizen platform following a new digital rollout by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
The online system replaces the long-standing manual process, removing the need for paperwork and repeated visits to NTSA offices. Under the new process, the seller initiates the transfer by uploading details and the logbook via eCitizen, while the buyer confirms electronically.
NTSA said applications can now be completed in minutes, with new logbooks issued within three working days. Each application generates a unique reference number for tracking, while the system also creates a digital audit trail to enhance transparency and curb fraud.
If rejected, sellers are notified instantly via SMS, with corrections allowed at no extra cost. The Authority warned motorists against paying bribes, insisting all dealings must be done online. It further reminded Kenyans that driving a vehicle under a previous owner’s name beyond 14 days breaches the Traffic Act.
The agency encouraged buyers to always verify ownership details on its portal before purchase. NTSA added that the digital shift will boost service delivery, enhance accountability, and strengthen compliance with traffic laws.
