NTSA orders mandatory retests for drivers caught reckless driving

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has ordered mandatory retests for drivers caught engaging in reckless driving, following widespread outrage over a viral video showing a Tahmeed bus dangerously overtaking passengers along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

In a statement released on Thursday, January 8, NTSA confirmed it had traced the driver through the bus SACCO and directed him to retake the driving test immediately. The authority also urged Kenyans to report any reckless driving incidents, providing vehicle registration numbers, locations, dates, and times to ensure swift enforcement.

“We contacted the SACCO, and the driver will undergo a retest today. Report any instances of reckless driving on our roads by providing details. Necessary action will be taken promptly,” NTSA said.

The video, which circulated widely on social media, sparked public outrage, with many condemning what appeared to be a dangerous overtaking race between the bus and a truck reportedly carrying muguka. While the bus company initially defended its driver, NTSA insisted that public safety remained the priority.

“The video clearly shows unsafe driving, and we will not tolerate reckless behaviour on Kenyan roads,” the authority added.

NTSA also revealed it had taken action against another PSV driver spotted driving recklessly from Kakamega to Nairobi. The driver failed a subsequent retest and has been required to enrol in a licensed driving school before being allowed to reattempt the driving exam.

The move follows NTSA’s rollout of stricter enforcement measures in November 2025, including mandatory retests for drivers flagged through enforcement operations and the Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS). Launched in 2023, the IRSMS monitors vehicle speed, route compliance, braking patterns, and driver behaviour. Alerts are automatically sent to NTSA when drivers violate traffic rules, allowing for prompt retraining or licence suspension.

NTSA’s proactive approach underscores the authority’s commitment to reducing road accidents, ensuring public safety, and fostering responsible driving behaviour across Kenya’s highways.
