NTSA orders mandatory safety checks on school buses ahead of reopening

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a mandatory directive to schools and school transport providers, requiring all vehicles carrying learners to undergo strict safety inspections before reopening.

In a notice dated August 15, NTSA emphasized that every school vehicle must be in proper mechanical condition to safeguard children’s lives.

This follows a nationwide inspection where NTSA flagged multiple safety violations. Some vehicles lacked speed limiters, while others had faulty or expired ones that failed to transmit data to NTSA’s road safety monitoring system.

Inspectors also discovered vehicles with torn seats, broken door locks, missing or defective seat belts, and poorly anchored seating. Others had rusted chassis, damaged bodies, and worn-out steering and suspension systems.

NTSA highlighted that several vehicles failed to comply with KS 372:2019 standards, which outline safety and passenger comfort requirements, including anti-roll bars and visible identification plates.

The Authority reminded schools and transport providers that all school vehicles must be built by approved manufacturers and inspected by certified professionals, with details available on the NTSA website.

“Teachers and school children must never be transported in unroadworthy vehicles,” NTSA stated firmly.

Beyond school transport, NTSA disclosed that over 315,000 public service and commercial vehicles nationwide currently lack valid inspection certificates. Owners of these vehicles have been notified and directed to undertake immediate remedial action.

To aid enforcement, NTSA urged police officers to use its free mobile app to verify inspection certificates on the spot.
