Nyandarua farmers embrace climate-smart fodder technologies to boost milk production and protect livelihoods

Livestock farmers in Nyandarua County are being encouraged to adopt innovative, climate-smart solutions to tackle fodder shortages and enhance dairy production. Speaking at a farmers’ field day in Olkalou on Monday, Governor Dr. Moses Kiarie Badilisha emphasized that climate change has disrupted traditional farming practices, threatening the livelihoods of small-scale farmers and pastoralists.

The event highlighted new technologies, including the Silage Master, designed to preserve silage by preventing oxygen exposure, a common cause of nutrient loss. The machine chops, mixes, and vacuum-seals fodder into bags, ensuring optimal fermentation and storage for up to two years.

Farmers also received training on modern silage preparation, storage, and usage to improve livestock health, boost milk yields, and strengthen household nutrition. Ms. Teresiah Wanja of Silage Master3000 stressed that the initiative combines practical technology with education to empower farmers and build resilience against climate-induced shocks.

Governor Badilisha noted that adopting such innovations is critical for sustaining dairy production in the county and securing livelihoods for local communities, particularly during periods of feed scarcity.
