Nyeri MCAs reject claims of plot to impeach Governor Kahiga following political tensions over Raila remarks

Members of the Nyeri County Assembly have dismissed reports suggesting a plan to impeach Governor Mutahi Kahiga, insisting that no such motion exists in the county.

Speaking to the press on Thursday, October 30, the MCAs described the claims as politically motivated propaganda aimed at sowing division within the Mt Kenya region. They maintained that the assembly remains united and focused on service delivery, not political drama.

“I have not heard of any plans to bring an impeachment motion because it would be a waste of time and resources unless it involves a constitutional matter such as misappropriation of funds,” said Chinga MCA Kiruga Thuku.

Thuku further noted that impeachment processes often leave counties more divided, adding that the governor had already apologised for his remarks against the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The response from the MCAs comes just two days after a High Court petition was filed in Nairobi seeking to have Governor Kahiga declared unfit to hold office. The petitioners argued that the governor’s inflammatory comments targeting Raila Odinga threatened national unity and urged the court to suspend him from duty pending the hearing of the case.

Governor Kahiga came under sharp criticism after making controversial comments in Kikuyu language on October 22, suggesting that Odinga’s passing was “a blessing in disguise” for the Mt Kenya region. He claimed the late opposition leader’s handshake with President William Ruto had diverted state resources away from Central Kenya to Nyanza.

The remarks drew public outrage and condemnation from political leaders across the country, prompting Kahiga to issue an apology.

Despite the political heat, Nyeri MCAs say their focus remains on governance, not political sideshows. “Our role is to deliver on development promises to the people of Nyeri,” one MCA said, emphasizing that the county remains stable under Kahiga’s leadership.
