Nyeri Woman Representative Rahab Mukami has urged the Nyeri County Government to waive all taxes and levies for persons with disabilities (PWDs), in line with the 2022 Nyeri Disability Act. She criticized the long vetting process for tax waiver certificates, saying it undermines the intended relief for vulnerable residents.
Speaking at PCEA Muhito Church in Mukurwe-ini during International Day for PWDs, Mukami donated over 20 wheelchairs, mattresses, blankets, food items, and charcoal jikos to children and elderly PWDs. She called for full implementation of both the Nyeri Disability Act 2022 and the Persons with Disabilities Act 2025 to empower the PWD community and enhance their participation in economic activities.
Members of the Nyeri Disability Network said current laws remain largely unimplemented, and they demand greater consultation in decision-making processes affecting their lives. They called for diversified support that addresses the evolving needs of the community, including special equipment for children with cerebral palsy.
Advocates also highlighted gender disparities in current empowerment programs, urging that men with disabilities benefit equally to prevent mental health challenges and marginalization. Visually impaired teacher Anthony Njagi stressed the need for compliance with the Persons with Disabilities Act 2025, which mandates at least 5 per cent representation of PWDs in public service, including promotions.
Mukami emphasized that effective support, inclusive policies, and timely implementation of disability laws are crucial for PWDs to lead dignified, productive lives.
