The Ministry of Interior has deployed more than 1,000 police officers to secure the ongoing World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally in Naivasha, Nakuru County. The officers will oversee rally routes, spectator zones, and key access roads during the competition, which runs from Thursday, March 12, to Sunday, March 15.
According to a statement by the ministry, the deployment draws officers from multiple security formations, ensuring safety for participants, spectators, and the general public. “More than 1,000 police officers drawn from various formations will be deployed across rally routes, spectator zones, and key access roads to maintain security, manage crowds, and support traffic control operations,” the ministry said.
The government also established a multi-agency coordination team, bringing together the National Police Service (NPS), National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), and Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA). These agencies are working closely with county authorities and rally organisers to guarantee smooth operations throughout the event.
Motorists and members of the public have been advised that temporary traffic management measures and road diversions will be implemented along rally routes and surrounding access corridors. Travelers using the Nairobi-Naivasha highway without business in Naivasha are encouraged to use alternative routes, including Nairobi-Limuru-Flyover-Njabini-Ol Ndondori-Lanet-Nakuru or the Nairobi-Mai Mahiu-Narok-Nakuru-Western Kenya corridor.
The ministry warned that ongoing heavy rainfall in some areas could cause localized flooding, urging drivers to exercise caution while commuting. Spectators are also reminded to follow safety instructions, remain in designated viewing zones, and avoid accessing restricted rally tracks or operational areas.
Event marshals and security officers are stationed at strategic points along the rally routes to provide guidance and enforce safety measures. The combined security and management efforts aim to guarantee a seamless rally experience while safeguarding both attendees and competitors.
The WRC Safari Rally is one of Kenya’s premier motorsport events, drawing participants and fans from across the globe. This year’s enhanced security measures underscore the government’s commitment to public safety and the smooth conduct of major sporting events.
