Panic in Nyatike as suspected explosive found along Migori-Sori Road ahead of President Ruto’s visit

Fear and panic have gripped Nyatike residents after a suspected explosive device was discovered under River Kuja Bridge along the Migori-Sori Road.

The device was spotted on Monday evening, December 16, by a passerby who noticed a suspicious wire and immediately alerted authorities. Nyatike sub-county police commander, Juma Londo, confirmed that police responded swiftly, disarmed the device, and sealed off the area for further investigations. “There was no casualty reported, and the situation is under control,” Londo said.

The incident comes just a day before President William Ruto is expected to attend the ongoing Piny Luo Festival at Rongo University and tour several sites, including Thimlich Ohinga and Senye Beach, using the same road.

Locals expressed concern over rising insecurity, noting repeated attacks targeting road users, particularly after dark. Bornface Oketch, a resident, said, “With an explosive planted here in broad daylight, it is clear security must step up.” Other residents called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo warned that such incidents could have far-reaching implications on national security, urging Kenyans to actively support efforts to safeguard their communities.
