Parliament lifts ban on forest harvesting at Eldoret Airport, Boma Airstrip after stakeholder review and clearance

The National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Environment, Forestry and Mining has lifted the ban on forest harvesting at Eldoret International Airport and Boma Airstrip, paving the way for the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to resume planned management and sale of forest resources.

The decision follows months of suspension and fresh scrutiny after concerns were raised in June over possible undervaluation of the 600-acre forest land at Eldoret Airport and 100 acres at Boma Airstrip.

After reviewing submissions from KAA, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), and the Kenya Forest Research Institute (KEFRI), the Committee cleared the process, saying the institutions had satisfactorily addressed transparency and valuation concerns.

Committee Chair and Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka said the green light was granted “with caution,” warning that any new evidence contradicting the findings could trigger a review.

“As much as we don’t want to treat you with suspicion, we expect full honesty and compliance with environmental laws,” he said.

Environment CS Deborah Mulongo and PS Gitonga Mugambi, who attended the session, backed the decision, saying it aligns with the government’s commitment to sustainable management of natural resources while supporting development priorities.

With the stop orders lifted, KAA can now move ahead with the selection of sawmillers and controlled harvesting as part of its forest management plan.
