Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has received a significant political boost after the Party of National Unity (PNU) formally endorsed his 2027 presidential bid.
The endorsement was announced during a joint press conference bringing together officials from PNU and the Jubilee Party, marking the beginning of a new political alliance ahead of the next General Election.
PNU Secretary General Frank Walukwe said the party had resolved not to field a presidential candidate in 2027 and would instead back Matiang’i’s candidature, citing his leadership credentials and public service record.
Jubilee Party Secretary General Moitalel Ole Kenta said the partnership goes beyond a single candidature, adding that the two parties would work jointly with other like-minded opposition groups to develop a broader working framework.
In a statement, Jubilee described the pact as a defining political moment, pointing to the parties’ governance experience and record in public administration, economic management and national cohesion.
The two parties lauded Matiang’i’s track record in education reforms, security coordination and public sector management, describing him as disciplined and results-driven.
Matiang’i, however, emphasised that the process of identifying a united opposition presidential flagbearer must be transparent and inclusive.
“In my view, it has to be a transparent and inclusive process. The process is as key as the end result,” he said.
PNU leader Peter Munya echoed the call for clear guiding conditions in selecting a joint candidate, stressing the need for consensus among coalition partners.
Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni described the alliance as an act of patriotism, saying the country’s interests should take precedence over individual ambition.
Matiang’i is expected to face competition within the opposition from leaders including former Chief Justice David Maraga, DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and People Liberation Party leader Martha Karua.
The emerging alliance signals early political realignments as parties position themselves to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 race.
