Authorities in Ruthiru-ini ward, Riabai, Kiambu County, have seized bhang worth KSh108,000 and arrested a 20-year-old woman said to be at the center of a growing drug problem affecting local youth.
The suspect, Ann Njeri, was arrested on Sunday after women from her local church confronted her about the illegal business. Senior Chief Antony Kariuki said the women had raised concerns about her involvement in bhang peddling and flagged her to the authorities.
“She was identified on her way from church. Some women who had suspicions about her stopped her and questioned her,” said Chief Kariuki. He added that Njeri is believed to have been running the operation with her mother, who is currently at large.
Residents of Ruthiru-ini have expressed deep concern about the ongoing drug activity in the area, which they say is endangering their children.
“Our children are being exposed to bhang while still in school. Some are even stealing household items to fund their addiction,” said one resident.
Chief Kariuki echoed the community’s frustration, stating that despite ongoing crackdowns, the illegal trade continues to pose a threat to families.
Kiambu County OCPD, Francis Njomo, confirmed the arrest and assured the public of continued operations targeting both users and dealers. “The crackdown on bhang is not ending anytime soon. Those arrested will be taken to court and prosecuted,” he said.
Ann Njeri remains in police custody awaiting a court hearing as investigations continue to trace her alleged accomplices.
