Police Officer Arrested After Loaded AK-47 Rifle Goes Missing in Gatundu South

A police officer stationed at the Karatu Police Station in Gatundu South has been arrested following the mysterious disappearance of a loaded AK-47 rifle.

The incident occurred on Tuesday and has raised serious concerns about security protocols and accountability.

Constable Benson Otenda was on duty, manning the station’s report office on Monday night. He handed over his responsibilities to a colleague on Tuesday morning around 6 am.

After his shift, Otenda retired to his quarters, taking with him the state-issued AK-47 rifle with serial number 5524595. He reportedly placed the firearm next to his bed and settled in for a nap.

Upon waking up later, Constable Otenda realized that the rifle was missing. Despite searching diligently, he could not account for the weapon, which was loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition.

The circumstances surrounding the disappearance remain unclear, but the implications are significant.

Authorities swiftly launched an investigation into the missing AK-47. The scene was visited by the CIPU commander, SCCIO, and OCS Gatundu South.

The sub-county team, along with the county security team comprising the CPC, CIPU, and CCIO, joined the effort.

A search team was dispatched to recover the firearm, and Constable Otenda was placed in custody pending further action.

As the investigation continues, questions about negligence and responsible firearm handling remain at the forefront.
