Jorge Mario Bergoglio, born on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, grew up as the son of Italian immigrants. Rising through the Church’s ranks, he became Archbishop of Buenos Aires and later a cardinal. In March 2013, the Church elected him as the 266th pope, succeeding Pope Benedict XVI. His election was historic because he was the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to hold the position.
Pope Francis gained recognition for his humility and progressive views. He championed causes such as environmental protection, economic equality, and the inclusion of marginalized communities. Choosing modest accommodations over the opulent papal apartments, he symbolized his commitment to simplicity and accessibility.
During his tenure, Pope Francis actively worked to reform the Church. He addressed issues like clerical abuse and advocated for compassion on controversial topics, including divorce and LGBTQ+ rights. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
