President Ruto announces new Thika–Museum Hill Expressway as government revives stalled Nairobi roads to ease traffic congestion

President William Ruto has announced an ambitious infrastructure push, revealing plans to construct a new Expressway linking Thika to Museum Hill beginning next year. The project, he said, is designed to ease the heavy traffic burden faced by thousands of commuters who rely on Thika Road daily.

Speaking during Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium, the President outlined a series of fresh and revived road projects across Nairobi, saying the national and county governments had agreed to return contractors to all stalled works in the capital.

Ruto noted that 60 kilometres of roads are already under construction in various estates, including Muhuri Road and Mama Wahu Road in Dagoretti South, the Mihang’o Link Bypass in Embakasi East, Umoja 1 SDA Road in Embakasi West, Thindigwa Road in Roysambu and Road C in Embakasi South.

He added that a new contractor had been deployed to restart the long-delayed Valley Road works, alongside ongoing upgrades on Ngong Road and Haile Selassie Avenue. The President further announced that the stretch from JKIA to ABC would be rebuilt and beautified starting this December to improve the city’s appearance.

Ruto also turned his attention to the wider Nairobi metropolitan region, saying many residents living in Kiserian, Rongai and Ngong continue to spend hours in daily traffic. To address this, he pledged to expand the Bomas–Rongai–Kiserian and Karen–Ngong–Kiserian corridors into dual carriageways.

On Thika Road, he acknowledged persistent congestion despite the existing eight-lane superhighway, saying the new Expressway would mirror the JKIA–Westlands Nairobi Expressway built under former President Uhuru Kenyatta through a public–private partnership.

According to the President, the Thika–Museum Hill Expressway will provide long-term relief, support economic activity along the corridor and form part of a broader plan to modernise Nairobi’s transport network.
